Asbestos Found in N.C. School Renovation

Material undisturbed until demolition, posing no risk to former students, officials say.

Asbestos has been found at the Union County Career Center, a technical high school located in Monroe, N.C., according to a report in the Charlotte Observer (Charlotte, N.C.).

Construction workers tearing down part of the school during a renovation project uncovered the material, which was found in the drywall compound, according to the report.

Health officials tell the Observer that the asbestos was not made airborne until the demolition, posing no health risks to former students or teachers.

The school had passed regular asbestos tests for 15 years, according to the report.

The Observer reports that the Career Center is undergoing a $20.1 million renovation and addition. Work halted after the asbestos was discovered, and the city is paying $63,000 to have the material removed, according to the report.
