Arson Suspected at Mass. C&D Landfill

More than half an acre of debris consumed by blaze.

Nantucket, Mass., officials are investigating a fire that burned for nearly four days at the Madaket landfill, according to a report in the Nantucket Island Inquirer (Nantucket, Mass.).

According to the report, Nantucket Fire Chief Everett Pierce and representatives from Waste Options, the company that operates the landfill, suspect arson is the likely cause of the fire, which consumed more than a half-acre of C&D debris and plastic.

The blaze was first reported Aug. 12 and was extinguished Aug. 15.

The speed with which the fire spread as well as a sighting of a five-gallon gas can near the fire’s origin are among the evidence that point to arson, according to the report.
