An Offer They Can’t Refuse

Orem, Utah, has passed a resolution that allows Orem business Dunn Construction and Demolition (DCD) to be included in a Recycling Market Development Zone¾a status that will provide both state tax breaks and a waiver of some city fees, according to a report in the Daily Herald (Provo, Utah).

The zone is a designation intended to promote recycling businesses and allow cities to influence where those businesses might locate. But the title does not change zoning or general plans, the Herald reports.

“It’s not so much a zone as it is a development tool,” Richard Manning, Orem assistant city manager tells the paper.

DCD, part of the Orem Transfer Station and Recycling Center, requested the zone from the city, according to the Daily Herald.

The tax breaks, which include a 5 percent income tax credit for a new cardboard baler, will help defer expenses on DCD’s new equipment, the facility’s recycling manager Jim Jensen tells the Herald.
