Allied Waste has had its contract with the city of Gary, Indianafs Redevelopment Department extended. The contract calls for Allied Waste to take in the C&D material generated by the cityfs Redevelopment Department.
The department performs the demolition work, which includes pulling out recyclable material and shipping them to other end markets. The remainder of the material will be shipped to one of Alliedfs two transfer stations, where it will then be shipped to the companyfs C&D landfill, roughly 15 miles away from Gary. All the material will be delivered to the landfill via trucks.
A spokesman for Allied notes that the material to be shipped from the Redevelopment Department is basically hit and miss, with the city performing demolition work for a short period of time and then not generating any material for several months.
As for the recyclables, he notes that the city does a "pretty good job" of pulling out the recyclables before shipping the demolition waste to Allied Waste.
According to a local news report, the contract is for $400,000, and dates back to Jan. 2007 and running through 2009.
