Abcov Enters Australian Market

New York company’s asbestos conversion system now available down under.

Abcov Conversion Systems LLC, New York, has signed an exclusive license and supply agreement and formed a joint venture with Environmental Solution Providers (Technology) Pty Ltd. In Australia, Abcov’s products will be marketed under the trade name Abcov-ESP.

Environmental Solution Providers Director Nigel Lee says ESP had recognized a need to put a stop to the spread of asbestos and asbestos-containing material in the Australian built environment and in Australian landfills, where it can continue to cause human exposure to asbestos diseases.

With this mission in mind, Lee says he “traveled and searched the world” to find the most environmentally friendly and safest way to destroy asbestos.

According to an Abcov press release, after evaluating asbestos destruction technologies for more than two years, the end result of Lee’s final research was to choose the “non-thermal, United States Environmental Protection Agency-approved, chemical-physical process known as the Abcov Process of Asbestos Destruction.”

Lee selected it as the simplest and most economic asbestos destruction process to operate, according to the news release.

Lee worked in coordination with Tony Nocito, Abcov Conversion Systems LLC’s managing member, to acquire an exclusive license and supply and joint venture agreement for Australia.

Once the Lee completed the training and certification processes, he asked Nocito to begin designing and building a transportable-mobile Abcov asbestos conversion system for Abcov-ESP use in Australia. That unit is scheduled to arrive in Australia by December of 2010.

Currently, Abcov-ESP is working with the Victoria Environmental Protection Agency and WorkSafe in Australia on an application for the system.

Yvonne Goedemondt of Australia’s Department of Construction and Infrastructure has been in contact with Abcov to discuss the on-site destruction of asbestos-containing material being removed from and stored on-site in 67 Aboriginal villages located in the Northern Territory, as well as other government projects in the territory.

In March of 2010, Lee met with Goedemondt to discuss the projects and Goedemondt has included the Abcov process in her business case to the Northern Territory Minister, according to the company.
