Demolition of the historic “cheese grater” building in downtown St. Petersburg, Florida, attracted onlookers, a report by Fox 13 News says.
Crews removed the metal façade that gave the building its nickname to reveal the original brick dating to the 1920s, when the building was a hotel. According to the report, the building was a bank before its demolition.
The future of the property is still foggy, according to the report, with rumors that Tampa Bay’s tallest sky scraper will replace the historic building. New York City-based Red Apple Group’s Mark Stroud brokered the deal and told Fox 13 News that its still finalizing plans. Stroud told Fox 13 news that retail space will likely take up the ground floor, with parking, luxury apartments and a hotel being other prospects.
