CMRA to Work with Industrial Resources Council Going Forward

The Industrial Resources Council (IRC) has received a grant from the U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to develop two products: a toolkit that will provide information on how to best and properly use certain recyclables, especially in the highway environment, and a Web site that will have much of the same information.

The IRC promotes the recycling and reuse of industrial by-products. The Construction Materials Recycling Association (CMRA) is part of IRC in order to promote the recycling of concrete. Other members of the IRC promote the recycling of coal ash, tires, foundry sand, slag and pulp and paper by-products.

Included on the IRC Web site will be a matrix of the relevant materials and the applications in which they can be used. Both the toolkit and the Web site are scheduled to be finished by the end of 2007.

The IRC has also been meeting with and presenting technical information to interested parties throughout the country. For example, in January the CMRA and the other organizations that make up the IRC made technical presentations to the top management of the U.S. EPA’s Office of Solid Waste. In February, the IRC presented to a group that included mostly members of the Arkansas Highway Department and the state’s environmental agency, as well as regional EPA members and other nearby states’ representatives. These talks are designed to answer questions these agencies might have about the use of the materials.

In August the IRC will have a booth and a sponsorship at the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials’ (AASHTO ) Material Committee in New Hampshire. Also planned are other opportunities for the group to meet with decision makers within the regulatory and highway community.
