Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp has signed an executive order granting Georgia State University permission to seek bids to demolish a four-deck parking garage on its campus in Atlanta.
The late-August order gives the Georgia state board of regents and its vice chancellor authorization to “demolish and remove” the structure, which was built in 1964.
The university convinced the governor the garage was no longer “advantageously useful.” There is no specific timeline on the executive order, although it does say the demolition order can be carried out “as expeditiously as possible.”
An article from SaportaReport refers to a 2019 Georgia State University master plan that calls for the removal of parking garages or decks and urges redevelopment to include more retail space.
