Symposium program and facility tours begin Nov. 12.
The 15th Annual Canadian Waste & Recycling Expo (CWRE) will return to the International Centre in Toronto Nov. 14-15. In cooperation with CWRE, the third Canadian Waste Sector Symposium (CWSS) (www.canwastesectorsymposium.ca) will produce a symposium program and offer facility tours beginning Nov. 12.
The 2012 CWSS is intended to serve as a forum for the discussion of waste sector policy and technology. Topics to be addressed include hazardous waste management, organics waste management, green energy, green management of waste, waste disposal and transfer.
Presented by companies such as Golder Associates, AECOM and Newalta, topics to be covered include EPR (end producer responsibility) programs, alternative fuel processes, risk assessments to landfill taxes, CNG (compressed natural gas) vehicles, residential waste composition and more.
A day of workshops will be held on Nov. 12. The workshops will include a morning and afternoon session, led by Gordon McGuinty, author of Trashed, described as a compelling behind-the-scenes look at EA approvals, hearings, politics and people. Attractive to management at any level, the morning session will be an interactive workshop focused on leadership and how to motivate people. The afternoon workshop covers the management of projects; from dealing with day to day politics to handling the media.
CWSS will coordinate a one-day tour of waste disposal and recycling facilities in Toronto and the surrounding area that transfer, manage, process and dispose of a variety of materials from both the residential stream and the industrial, commercial and institutional (ICI) sectors. Visiting more than 10 facilities, the tour will also cross the border into the United States.
