The Construction & Demolition Recycling Association, (CDRA), a national association for C&D recyclers, has recognized Southern Waste Systems (SWS), and its sister company, Sun Recycling, as the 2014 C&D Recycler of the Year. The award was presented March 5 in Las Vegas at the annual meeting of the CDRA.

SWS serves Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River counties in Florida. Sun Recycling, an affiliated construction and demolition debris company, operates facilities in Pompano Beach, Dania Beach, West Palm Beach, Lantana, Deerfield Beach and Miami, Fla.

“We have been dedicated to recycling for over 35 years,” said Charles Gusmano, president and CEO on behalf of the company and its more than 700 employees. “The work that our team performs in South Florida is focused on sustainable practices that protect our states natural resources. We are honored to be recognized by our industry for the work we have been committed to for over three decades,”

The C&D Recycler of the Year awards honor those recycling operations in the C&D recycling industry that have made an extraordinary contribution to the industry. Criteria includes:

  • advancing business operations that result in increased recycling percentages;
  • developing novel methods of marketing and conducting business;
  • innovative practices in employer-employee relations;
  • ensuring safer operations;
  • protecting the environment; and
  • developing industry standards.

“We are delighted to recognize all who have made a commitment to the recycling industry and their communities,” said Valerie Montecalvo, president of the CDRA. “It is because of their commitment to the environment [that] our country is able to move to a more sustainable future.”
