A construction site for the soon-to-be headquarters of the St. Petersburg Police Department in St. Petersburg, Florida, almost turned deadly April 5 as a crane collapse nearly missed nearby construction workers, the Tampa Bay Times reports.
The crane was reportedly carrying a scissor lift weighing approximately 1,000 lbs. at the time of the collapse. Workers were able to scramble out of the way of the falling arm, and even though the crane’s cab was overturned, the operator “limped away,” according to reports.
According to city officials, nobody was injured in the collapse.
“It was a very unfortunate accident,” mayoral spokesman Ben Kirby said according to the report. “We all got lucky today and most importantly, no one was hurt.”
Kirby said a safety officer from the Midway, Florida-based Ajax Building Corporation, the construction company in charge of the project, was investigating the incident but had not yet determined the cause of the collapse. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) also opened an investigation into the incident, but has yet to offer comment.
