Armstrong World Industries, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, has named CarpetCycle LLC of Newark, New Jersey, as its 2013 Ceiling Recycler of the Year. This is the third consecutive year that the award has been presented to CarpetCycle.

During 2013, CarpetCycle recycled more than 1.5 million square feet of ceiling tiles from 50 different renovation projects instead of sending the material to landfills.

Armstrong says the award is designed to recognize “companies and organizations that make significant environmental contributions through their recycling initiatives.”

Other companies Armstrong recognized for their 2013 ceiling recycling efforts include:

  • Top Corporate Recycler — Hartz Mountain Industries, Secaucus, New Jersey, 626,000 square feet;
  • Top Recycling Distributor — GTS Interior Supply, Portland, Oregon, 276,000 square feet;
  • Top Recycling Contractor — Southeastern Interiors, Erwin, North Carolina, 188,000 square feet; and
  • Largest Recycling Project — Geppert Brothers Inc., Colmar, Pennsylvania, 407,000 square feet.

CarpetCycle began recycling ceiling materials in 2005 as part of the Armstrong Ceiling Recycling Program. The program enables building owners to ship ceilings from demolition and renovation projects to the nearest Armstrong ceiling plant as an alternative to landfill disposal. The discarded ceiling tiles are then used to manufacture new ceilings through a closed-loop process.

Ceiling recycling also contributes to the United States Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) materials and resources credit for construction waste management.

Since it began the program in 1999, Armstrong has helped recycle more than 159 million square feet of discarded ceiling tiles. This represents more than 79,500 tons of construction scrap that has been diverted from landfills.
